Ionization Chamber Radiation Detector

Description

This radiation detector uses an ordinary coffee can to detect low levels of radiation, much like a Geiger counter, but without the clicking.

The PicAXE08M determines the level of radiation by detecting extremely low currents with the aid of a common electrometer JFET, used in an unorthodox manner that eliminates the need for special and expensive high-value resistors.

My prototype can readily see changes in chamber current as low as 10 fA on the most sensitive scale. As a point of reference an ordinary radioactive lantern mantle can peg the second scale.
